Paper2pearls and sustainability

My use of paper from old books and vintage sheet music remains at the heart of my business and while I source the old copies of books I use from charity shops or from the "Acceptable" section of World of Books which is a B Corp I have been lucky enough to have been gifted a stacker box full of vintage sheet music. My sterling silver findings and other findings where available are sourced from Cookson Gold, another B Corp. I source most of my packaging materials from environmentally friendly companies and they are all made from recycled card and this also holds true for card blanks.

Although they are not perfect I use Royal Mails for my on-line orders as they have the lowest CO2 emissions of any delivery company and I also make use of their home collection service.

My energy is supplied by Octopus and my studio is all electric (though my boiler in my house is gas fired) meaning my electricity is green.

I am a member of Blue Patch and I use a percentage of my profits to support nature restoration projects with Ecologie.

Sustainability report April 2026
2025 Targets review
2025 targets:
To continue with actions already in place. Achieved
To have a heat pump installed (subject to survey). Survey completed but unable to proceed as there is no space in my bungalow for a heat pump.
As my Motability car is due to be replaced at the end of the year to research plug in hybrids and full electric models. Achieved. I now have a fully electric car and as my electricity is from Octopus this means there are no emissions when driving.
Scope 3 emissions
I am continuing with my previous actions.
-
Install a heat pump so all my heating is from renewable sources. Not possible
-
Change my car for a plug-in hybrid or full electric. Car is fully electric
-
Investigate the possibility of sourcing supplies from local businesses. As yet I have not managed to do this.
2026 targets
To continue with all previous actions.
To investigate other sustainable and upcyclable materials I can use.
To ensure all my garden and food waste is composted by using bins provided by my local council.
To reuse postal packaging materials as much as possible.
To source as many of the materials I use as possible from B-Corp and other companies with good environmental credentials.
For the findings I use which are manufactured in China (as the vast majority are) investigate the most sustainable way of sourcing these.
To complete the Blue Patch Carbon Awareness programme and take part in their zoom meetings where these are relevant to me.
