- Sustainability Report 2026 | Paper2Pearls
Paper2pearls and sustainability My use of paper from old books and vintage sheet music remains at the heart of my business and while I source the old copies of books I use from charity shops or from the "Acceptable" section of World of Books which is a B Corp I have been lucky enough to have been gifted a stacker box full of vintage sheet music. My sterling silver findings and other findings where available are sourced from Cookson Gold, another B Corp. I source most of my packaging materials from environmentally friendly companies and they are all made from recycled card and this also holds true for card blanks. Although they are not perfect I use Royal Mails for my on-line orders as they have the lowest CO2 emissions of any delivery company and I also make use of their home collection service. My energy is supplied by Octopus and my studio is all electric (though my boiler in my house is gas fired) meaning my electricity is green. I am a member of Blue Patch and I use a percentage of my profits to support nature restoration projects with Ecologie. Sustainability and Environmental Impact Report Sustainability report April 2026 2025 Targets review 2025 targets: To continue with actions already in place. Achieved To have a heat pump installed (subject to survey). Survey completed but unable to proceed as there is no space in my bungalow for a heat pump. As my Motability car is due to be replaced at the end of the year to research plug in hybrids and full electric models. Achieved. I now have a fully electric car and as my electricity is from Octopus this means there are no emissions when driving. Scope 3 emissions I am continuing with my previous actions. Install a heat pump so all my heating is from renewable sources. Not possible Change my car for a plug-in hybrid or full electric. Car is fully electric Investigate the possibility of sourcing supplies from local businesses. As yet I have not managed to do this. 2026 targets To continue with all previous actions. To investigate other sustainable and upcyclable materials I can use. To ensure all my garden and food waste is composted by using bins provided by my local council. To reuse postal packaging materials as much as possible. To source as many of the materials I use as possible from B-Corp and other companies with good environmental credentials. For the findings I use which are manufactured in China (as the vast majority are) investigate the most sustainable way of sourcing these. To complete the Blue Patch Carbon Awareness programme and take part in their zoom meetings where these are relevant to me.

- Sustainability glossary | Paper2Pearls
A glossary of terms often used when claiming that a product or service has good environmental standards. Green glossary This is just a brief glossary of the most popular terms used. I’m including it here as I strongly believe that having an understanding of what they mean helps when making choices and makes it harder for companies to use greenwashing (don’t worry, that one will be included) to bamboozle us. Eco-friendly This is not the best term to use as it isn’t very specific. It refers to things that don't harm the environment but is open to interpretation and does not mean the same to everyone. Environmentally friendly This refers to minimising harm to the environment by aiming to help improve it and making as little impact on it as possible. Ethical An ethical business demonstrates integrity and fairness. They are transparent about their business practices and policies. Businesses with these qualities have loyal workers and customers. Green A green business is one whose products do not cause significant harm to the environment and in fact may even improve it and the health of humans. It is a very wide term and its meaning is similar to that of sustainability. Greenwashing This refers to businesses that deliberately aim to make it appear that their products are environmentally sound when this is not the case. This is often done through how packaging is designed to project a "green" image and making misleading environmental claims. Recycled This refers to a material that is collected and then processed back into the original material or a new one e.g. plastic bottles recycled into polyester filling. Repurposed Repurposing turns an item into something completely unrelated to its original purpose, for example turning DVDs into jewellery. Reusable Self-explanatory, an item that can be used for the same purpose many times as opposed to a single use version, e g. A metal water bottle rather than a single use plastic one. Sustainability This refers to a business that causes none or minimal damage to the environment. This means it also seeks to maintain or improve the environment in the longer term and so importantly will not have an adverse effect on future generations. It has three aspects to it, as well as not harming the environment a sustainable business should also have a commitment to social and economic benefits. Upcycled This refers to something having value added to it while keeping it in its original form. One of the most popular uses for this term is with old or vintage furniture which has been painted or has had other decorative effects added to it. Vintage An item such as furniture, clothing or home decor that is at least 30 (or sometimes 20) years old.
